Diane Thueson Reich, soprano, is a Professor of Voice at Brigham Young University where she serves as Division Coordinator for Classical Voice and also teaches Vocal Literature and Supervised Teaching courses. She has previously taught and been the Director of Opera at Central Washington University. She has earned doctoral and master’s degrees from Indiana University. At home in the concert hall or opera stage, she has appeared in major operatic roles such as Marguerite in Faust, Anne Trulove in 好的梯子软件, the title role in Strauss’ Arabella, Nanetta in Falstaff, Rosina in The Ghosts of Versailles, Mimì in La Bohème, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Valenncienne in The Merry Widow, and Antonia in The Tales of Hoffman. Diane has performed with professional opera and theater companies, including the Utah Festival Opera Company, Opera West, Indiana University Opera Theater, Utah Lyric Opera, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma City, and River City Players. She created the role of Rosamond in the world premiere of Michael Valenti’s opera, Beau Nash, performed with Portland Chamber Orchestra.

Dr. Reich has been a guest artist with Icicle Creek Music Festival, Third Angle Ensemble in Portland, OR, and also appeared with the Yakima and Walla Walla Symphonies, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Utah Chamber Orchestra, Indiana University Philharmonic, Indiana State and Utah State University orchestras, as well as soloing in the northwest premiere of George Crumb’s Star Child in Seattle’s Benaroya Hall. She was a featured soloist with Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Company in Hanoi, a guest soloist with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic in Russia, and has sung several concerts throughout Vietnam and China. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica in Pescara, Italy, and the National University of Arts Education in Hanoi, Vietnam. Diane is a multiple Metropolitan Opera Audition winner in both the Utah and Indiana Districts and won first place in the Vera Scammon International S.O.S. Voice Competition. She has been the recipient of numerous scholarship and academic awards as well. Diane’s research endeavors have led her to be a leading authority on the vocal music of contemporary composer Henry Mollicone.

Dr. Reich’s students have gone on to prestigious graduate programs such as Indiana University, University of Houston, Arizona State University, Cleveland Institute of Music, and University of Missouri-Kansas City. Her students have also been accepted to participate in training programs throughout the world.

The myriad of ensembles at BYU make it possible for every student to find a group that fits their skill, schedule and favorite style of music. Representing BYU across the world, many of the touring ensembles are among the most widely traveled collegiate groups and offer performers a cosmopolitan educational experience.

Jihea Hong-Park will join the Keyboard Performance faculty of the Brigham Young University School of Music in Fall 2024. She is a lead teaching artist at the New York Philharmonic and piano faculty at The Juilliard School’s Evening Division. She received her BM and MM degrees at The Juilliard School and pursued advanced coursework at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Hong-Park has performed at major New York venues and international concert stages. She has also been featured as a guest artist, lecturer, and instructor across the world at prestigious institutions and festivals.  Read more.

Brent Wells will join the faculty of the Brigham Young University School of Music as Director of Concert Choir and Men’s Chorus in Fall 2024. Dr. Wells is an Associate Professor of Music at the College of Idaho, where he also serves as its Director of Choral Activities. He received his DMA in choral conducting from Michigan State University and his BM in music education and MM in choral conducting from BYU. Wells is a published composer and arranger, as well as an accomplished bass vocalist who has sung professionally.   Read more.

Jennifer Youngs will join the Vocal Performance faculty of the the Brigham Young University School of Music in Fall 2024. Dr. Jennifer Youngs has been Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Vocal Studies at Texas Woman’s University since 2017. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Performance and Pedagogy and a Master of Music degree in Performance and Opera from the University of North Texas, as well as a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance from the Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific. Youngs is a soprano who has performed with The American Baroque Opera Company, the Dallas Opera, and the Dallas Symphony.  Read more.

Kevin Anthony will join the Commercial Music and Composition & Theory faculty of the the Brigham Young University School of Music in Fall 2024. Currently completing a PhD at the University of California, Irvine in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology, he has a passion for maintaining interdisciplinary environments that promote collaborative creativity. He has researched and worked in a great breadth of fields including digital signal processing and spectral analysis, artificial intelligence, sensor-circuitry, animation and illustration, non-verbal communication in virtual spaces, virtual reality, and motion-to-music translation.  Read more.

Thousands applauded last semester in the de Jong Concert Hall, while more than twelve thousand others cheered at the same time in fifty other countries. Thanks to BYU School of Music’s new streaming system, anyone around the world with Internet can join the audience for many of our events.

The new experience provides three high-definition cameras, each equipped with the ability to zoom in, pan out and switch angles. These effects are hand-operated to provide a personalized tour of each performance while highlighting individual performers. Read more.

In the School of Music, students learn self-expression and self-discipline through rigorous practice and passionate performance. In the study of music theory and history, students learn to hear and appreciate various musical languages, distinguish nuances of style, and discern the connections between musical developments and their cultural contexts.

Students learn in a variety of situations: private lessons, small seminars, multimedia labs, ensembles, recitals, and lectures. PERFORMING ARTS MANAGEMENT

Performing Arts Management is the managing agency for BYU’s performing companies and functions in professional as well as educational circles. The touring program typically has 400 performances each year, reaches 140 cities in 20 countries annually, and appear before millions on foreign and domestic television.

GROUP FOR NEW MUSIC

Group for New Music features student and faculty performers and conductors presenting the prominent works of our time. The concerts frequently include World and US premieres of BYU faculty compositions, and provide students with an excellent opportunity to experience music at the cutting edge.

BYU Opera Theatre is the longest continuing opera training program west of the Mississippi. Fall semester features a full opera production, with opera scenes in the winter, and a chamber opera each spring. The Opera Workshop class provides additional training in skills for performance and interpretation.
